Most people when they see countless websites, with gear that is hardly affordable and hard on the eyes ( like the last Montreal show ), is basically gear that is on long term loans and usually and consequently never paid for by retailers. We do not submit to this practice, we only demonstrate gear we actually own, sell and represent. The reason behind this is several folds. How can we sell and know something if we do not buy it ourselves. Sampling gear is fine, but deep down one dealer must commit to buying for themselves.

Secondly, owning ones gear paid with cold hard cash makes for a solid dealer, even in tough times. Not the easiest way to do business, but the best way for sure. Its a practice we have set from the get go.

So next time you ask if we own our gear, all our gear, look at us straight in the eye and ask. Even our Oxford level set ups are entirely owned by us.

Aurum Vulkan speakers, Aurum A5 amplifier, Musical Fidelity M 6 level DAC and transport, Kimber Selekt cable

SAurum Vulcantereo Passion International has been selling the Aurum brand for over 5 years. We have worked hard on this brand, but once we started, Ottawa got behind this as a fresh sounding brand name. The level which we are aiming at is relatively high. The Vulkans, depending on fit and finish now go at around 20,000.00 Part of the reference models that this Aurum is part of, what makes this unique, is the speakers ability to get into the music all the while providing a full sonic view of the musical soundscape. This means, this level of Aurum is excellent at letting you in on hearing all that is micro and macro in and about your music. This present predisposition is not polite in any way, plan on hearing things that you may not have heard before. One listen, one will know why we have done good with its little brother, The Aurum Montans. Transparency, full range predisposition, excellent fit and finish, our Aurum line up is not cable sensitive, but we beg that some attention needs to be had at this level.

The Aurum A5 amplifier ports good power, surface mount technology, dual mono design, a clean and very delineated sound. All about the A series is for long lasting service, from volume pot, to resistors, transistors and power supply. Nearly all parts are German born. The measurements and Sonic's are about assisting their own speakers in a quest for their imprints. In other words, it adds neutrality but with a hint of detail.

Remember the A series was designed to take the maximum out of their speaker brand. Staging is quite good, emotional content is above average and this is easily heard on this speaker. Another key point is that this amplifier can deliver notes quickly and with resolve. Think YBA or Spectral. Space between instruments and nodal interplay are equally very good. This Aurum A 5 amplifier does provide power, but its not meant to provide gobs of power but it does have quick access to over 200 wpc. Aurum speakers are usually benign loads and are rather efficient.  Both the above are hand built in Germany.

Musical Fidelity M 6 DAC and Transport are being used for several key reasons. Mainly and this applies to all companies, when one commits to detail and transparency, we may have on occasion add warmth to the mix. The M 6 DAC is renowned for being a very full range and bloomy sound (some would say analogue sound), all the while providing providing gobs of details. This means that the Aurum sound is being respected up front. This does not play with what Aurum is known for. One thing this Musical Fidelity source will add is sound staging ability. As good as the above are, I am cheating with this M6 DAC. Density of timbre, depth and a warm and near liquid presentation is abound, BUT without taking or editorializing what the system is about.

We finish up, with Kimber Selekt level cables , from digital, interconnect as well as speaker cable. The choice of Kimber Selekt cable will respect what the M 6 DAC is about and what the Aurum speakers are about WITHOUT short changing any component. This is quite important with the Aurum brand.

POSITIVE ATTRIBUTES: Engaging detailed and lively sound. Emotional on cue, exceeding great nodal and instrumental interplay, exquisite delivery,  excellent macro dynamics with a hefty bottom end that is quick to respond to the above registers. Set up simplicity
NEGATIVE: Smallish remote for the A 5 amplifier, not much room to play with in terms of keeping this sound, will need a medium size room in order to let this system breathe.
Thanks kindly for visiting us to listen to this system

Audio Note Oxford Systems Level 4
AUdio note
Its easy to turn anything this brand makes into an Oxford system set up. Audio Note is not immune from derisive comments like all other brands. Its simply stems usually from folks have not heard any Audio Note gear.

What I had in mind ahead of time, after the relatively heavy first 2 set ups of Naim and our well loved Aurum brand in  January 2015 was a simple and clean Audio Note set up, that would be pure AN throughout. Also it would be entirely digital. One main reason is that AN, the company make digital a different way, a way that makes their sound sound like quite and nearly analogue sounding. As much as I did not idly by when folks were bashing the analogue records medium in the 90’s, I do the same with the digital today. Case in point will be with this 3 rd system we have set up for you folks starting in February sometime.

I decided to bring from Lounge 376, the Audio Note 4.1 x CD player, what many in the know call perhaps one of the best 1 box players out there at this very time. All manual , something like Naim CD players, this unit serves up a sound that is really quite unique... just wait, I’ll get there. On  the other end of the spectrum, we will be serving one of the "biggies" in speaker land, the Audio Note AN-E’s. Looking as you see quite "simple" looking, one does and will not get any "simple sound". This simple and outstanding design has been reworked, revised and is offered in many variations costing the price of a Canadian home.

I have decided to keep it absolutely simple in the middle ground and not add complexity that Lounge 376 gear can add quite easily to any AN set up (add complexity in any set up, you add cost !). I will be adding the new generation  of the Audio Note Oto with a new design and a new tube variant of an EL 84, the 7025, that is more linear sounding as well as lasting 10,000 hours or so. Thats it!!

As to cables, well I will state they will be from Audio Note. The AN-A speaker cables (really you folks say ? Really I say, one of my all time favourite speaker cables for about 1,200.00 or so CDN dollars). But I get back with the Audio Note Sogon between the Cd player and amplifier. For those that would want to hear a more affordable source, we will also have a Audio Note CD 3.1 x II, with AN –C interconnect.

The sound will be pure as well as typical Audio Note. Some would call this natural, unforced, creamy, velvety but in a clean and linear way, stagy with quite the holographic delivery and details that are presented in a way that one would not be a customized to hearing. There is warmth, transparency, a holographic sense about the music, BUT what one gets knocked up with is an absolute sense of limpidity and liquidity that is not hi fi sounding , but well quite natural sounding. The resonance and after notes coming from the music are usual the "coup de grace", the final blow to falling in love. We never state that AN is for everyone, but what we do say, usually once one  hears AN, one will get it at a minimum. The Audio Note ethos is not to portray a "sound", but to at least try to portray what a natural instrument sounds like. I believe this is their calling card, their ace in the hole.

This set up will be in one of our private rooms, RSVP recommended and preferred.

POSITIVE ATTRIBUTES : Engaging, natural and relaxed holographic sound that tends to defy criticism. Highly focused system that spends it energy on getting timbre’s right on all fronts. Highly addictive and system’s that tend to change ones perspective on what is important in the audio arts. There are smaller AN gear for those on a budget, expect little change in sound attributes. Absolutely solid designs with little problems in our 14 years of selling AN.
NEGATIVE : None to speak of, other than cost of Audio Note gear. Size of gear tends to be big and somewhat cumbersome and yes, retro looks that some may find bland.

PRIMA LUNA PREMIER, ADVANCE ACOUSTIC K 11’S AND AUDIO NOTE DIGITAL.

Advance Acoustic

This system proves that we can design Oxford level set ups that perform at a superior level than most other systems at this level of pricing. Note that we have chosen tubes in the mix, and please note we have chosen Audio Note source.

Our AN CD 3.1 X II is to say the least , one of the bloodiest fun CD players to listen. Many have turned their heads when this is playing. We have spoken plenty about this player. Simply stated, digital still has not stated its last word as plenty seem to be wrongly implying.

Now our PL Prologue Premier is STILL winning yearly awards for being perhaps one of the most well regarded tube amplifiers in the last 2 years. I was taken aback when I burned this unit in last Xmas 2013. I actually listened, and further, did not care listening to this very unit all the while I was off and on vacation. I rarely do this ever. When I am off, I am off or sorts. Plenty of beautiful things can be said, but I will insist that one comes to visit us.

Now if we have a special source as well as a special amplifier, we have an even better speaker. We can help help you define what special is, but these are absolutely wonderful, to my ears.
Full range and not exactly small, these play like an extremely small mini monitor that can batter closed doors wide open. These do nothing wrong, and this for less than 4,595.00. Again, we will insist on having you fine folks come in, bring music.

Other than our elaborate Linn set ups that will take place later in spring, hope you have enjoyed our Oxford level set up’s as much as we have. Our mission is also to educate that in the right hands, audio set ups can be made to sound stunningly beautiful, without spending your life savings.

Oxford logoSim Audio Evo series, Aurum, Volents, Nordost.

How can we go from chatting from entry level TEAC, then to illustrious tube companies we sell you fine folks, then enter into a brief diatribe about about our very first OXFORD level set up in 2016. For sure, pictures will follow, but usually when we promise something, we do it.

OXFORD set ups, are designed to get a particular state of the art sound that we set out and planned on. Often quite or vary expensive, but not insane as far as high end goes.

This is also the first time that EVO level gear from Sim Audio is being introduced as well as NEO sources as well. Having taken 4 months to burn in (read our no wine before its time article), our EVO series will begin it’s debut effective now.

By all means, bring your music and be prepared to be blown away. We placed our unique OXFORD level brand there for a reason folks, we are not messing around, this is serious stuff Smile with tongue out. NOW ON WORKING DISPLAY, a Canadian first systems display... yes, right here in Ottawa, NOW!

All welcome

Audio Note Oxford level system.

Audio NoteAudio Note Dac 3

We plan on having a tremendous amount of fun with our AN system that is on display. If we can pull this off, we may within a weeks time show folks the difference between several levels of AN gear. From 1 through 3 preamplifier and power amplifier. As stated in Lounge376, we might if all else breaks loose, also demonstrate all within a weeks or so time, the difference between The AN Z2Hemp version speakers, the AN-E’s classic speakers then bring in the Tannoy Prestige Turnberries SE for the kill. We may then add either AN 300B tubes in the mix, AN signature in the mix and so on. This should take place on Saturdays till the 20th of this month. We will even bring a few Sogon and JPS Aluminata cables for the ultimate killer system.

We will not accept any RSVP in our private listening room unless some are interested in purchasing AN gear.

Several of the AN components are Lounge376 loans and as such temporary on our sales floor.

 SYSTEM # 1

Naim, Kudos, Nordost cables, Usher stands

Over 11 years ago I noticed that something was special when one combined a superior next level Naim preamplifier to a Naim amplifier in the quality level underneath said preamplifier (NAC 282 driving a NAP 200 and so on). This is no exception, as what I like about doing this is that these kind of mixes provide several key attributes: high compatibility, high resolution, quick speed and response time and the undeniable ability to be fleet footed. Mix this in with Naims usual warm and pungent tumbral abilities, the Naims NAC 202 and NAP 155 XS are a marriage made in heaven. Aside from the obvious above qualities, these pre/amplifier combinations allow for a much clearer and better upgrade path than their Naim integrates counter part.Naim
Naim power supplies play a huge part of this set up and where we head next may surprise a great many of you. We have opted to quite literally go the next level with the digital side of this equation, by adding a Naim CD2X with Naim XPS DR power supply. I further added a Naim Hi Cap DR between the Naim 202 and the 155 XS amplification.  One may reduce the price by adding a Naim CD5 XS player . It is upgradable with either Flatcap XS or Hi Cap DR later on. These power supplies add heft , authority, increases Naims world leading pace and rhythm to the mix. But by adding the above CD2X/XPS DR, one adds depth, added emotional content to instruments and yes overall transparency that remains sweet and very delineated.

The above could only make sense if the speaker fronting this system was up for the challenge. I initially brought Kudos X2 to be mated nearly exclusively with Naim. The mix is quite magical. The speakers in question are the  Kudos Super 20’s. Slightly diminutive in size, but very typical of Kudos speakers, they all sound huge. The Super series use one of the worlds greatest tweeters, and a unique woofer that is of very high quality. Should you read that Kudos does well with Naim, I can confirm this . At very first listen , with this system , one is hit with this speakers ability to draw you into the music. Atmospheric beyond belief (the Kudos play a part here with the Naim power supplies), they image far beyond what one is expecting, behind the speakers, and behind the listener and these play very wide. These are very up to the challenge of meeting the demands of the most excellent system behind it.

Analogue does not take a back seat either. A Rega RP 8 with Rega Apheta cartrige and Benz Lucachek phono stage pick up the pace where the digital system left off . One  can add the Naim Super line with a power Hi CAP DR supply but this further adds significant price increases to the mix. But I have chosen the Lucachek for its high sense of musicality.

I use several levels of Nordost cables, 5 pin to 5 pin as well as speaker cables. Each and every cable used is meant to complement or highlight specific traits and strength's of this system.

This is the first of our Oxford level 3 system that will be displayed in 2015. Display time will be till Saturday January 17th. Picture will follow soon.

Positive qualities: This system possesses in my opinion one of the highest level of intra component synergy at this price range. Also provides many upgrade paths that are easily initiated.
Negative: The high synergy level of this system comes at a price. Little leeway can be had without loosing this synergy.

System from Audio by Luc Morin

ALM
Musical Fidelity Nu VistaAudio By Luc Morin is I said previously about OCD absolutely gone wild. You have it or you don't. Kris, our main set up guy did not come into this alone. It took several years for Kris to get to where he is before I stopped checking his set ups. Steve, after 3 years with us, and being the anal audiophile he is... still has some ways to go, but trust me when I say, he is getting there. My floor crew don't have any choice in the matter, I ask that they do the job beyond right from the beginning, from even taping the boxes right to making sure all is beyond just good. Its all about temperament. I have seen to many shows in Montreal where speaker symmetry is ill placed, where bi wire cables are used on 2 binding posts behind a speaker with the treble ends just left hanging , where lamp cord is being used as speaker cable, where turntables have not been set up right, where many try too impress the eyes of incoming visitors instead of the EARS... and yes, the list goes on. I would not even allow 2 % of some things I have seen on my more than elaborate and musical office system.

Sometimes ALM is about being a wizard in many ways. The system planning starts in my head, then I start bringing in this or that component and imagine what the sound will be or what I want the sound to be. Then I get excited about said planning and eventually a creation is born. Then Kris will set up this system and once the hard work done I come in and wave my wand and start the tweaks that will give me what I want to hear.

The last time at this level I proceeded with my team was 3 years ago. This spring, SPI, will allow itself the honour to demonstrate a unique system that is only available  here with us, nowhere else in Canada like the last time, dare I say , maybe in North America. So blessed will be this system that I will make sure that it out performs systems costing many times more, yes even at this level. I kid you not and double dare you folks. Funnies aside, it may be another 3 years before we see this level of system into play again. I will not even tell you folks what it is, with the exception of JUST right before when Roger will upload pictures of this creation, about a week before or so... just maybe, don't know yet.

Dates will be provided in early February, we may even have a Friday evening geared in (Should we have a Friday evening, we will ask an RSVP as the spots will be limited to approx 15 clients), over the course of 2 weekends only and not during the week. However in our private room, we will have M3 si level system from Musical Fidelity on Triangle speakers, yes you have read right, Triangle speakers. This will be our second last systems display in  spring 2015.

Passion has a name, believe me when I say , the word passion will see new heights on the few days where this event will take place. My team and I can do that. See you all soon.

Your SPI team

Both systems represent our Oxford Collection. Well over 200,000.00 of on display gear on our all out Last Big Show ever in March 2012. Spanning 4 shows, 3 months of planning, over 100 clients from all over, these events could not be achieved without these  men at my side: Kris, Roger, Steve and myself. Note Kris, our main set up person’s care in setting all up. Over 3 days of actual setting up and testing both systems. Audio Note 3/4/6 level gear with Tannoy Prestige speakers. This was our most expensive show in absolute cost to promote. Something for everyone, we say ?
